Yes, 28 November, is the birthday of the United States Navy Chaplain Corps. On this day in 1775, the Continental Congress directed that divine services be held aboard all naval ships. This began ministry afloat! A few years later, Benjamin Balch was commissioned as the first Navy Chaplain.
We’ve come a long way in the last 250 years. Our uniforms are a little different. Some of our customs have changed along the way. The ships we sail on have REALLY changed in 250 years. But the ministry of the chaplain has stayed the same for centuries. We perform religious services for our Sailors and Marines. We provide for the faith traditions that we do not personally handle. We care for the well-being of all Service Members and Families. We advise the command and individuals on morals and ethics.
I’ve had the absolute privilege and pleasure to be a Navy chaplain since 2015. It is some of the best ministry I have ever done. I tell my wife (and anyone who will listen, actually) that, even on my hard days – I still love my job.
So happy birthday, Navy Chaplain Corps. For all those who have come before us, those who serve now, and all who will follow long after we are gone, I’m grateful for you all and for the job we do to take care of our Sailors and Marines.
